The concept of classic interior style in design practice can have two meanings. Classic as “classicism” draws on the heritage of antiquity and the architecture of Ancient Rome.
This is the so-called historical interpretation of classic style.
The second version of classic unites several movements at once — Baroque, classicism proper, Rococo, Empire, and others.
Classic style appeals to calm and conservative people. Classic furniture is bought to last and is passed down by inheritance. It is handmade from natural wood — walnut, cherry, Karelian birch and adorned with gilding, mother-of-pearl, and carving, so the furniture becomes a work of art.
Such furniture is created by specialist firms, at the clients’ request. Narrow vertical display cabinets look austere and elegant.
Classic interior style is unquestionably suited to people of high social standing. Such an interior — is a bright, calm room of regular shape, not overloaded with details and radiating calm and solidity.
A classic interior is not excessive, not overloaded with details, does not “hit you in the eye”, filled with restrained dignity, taste, and respectability. The elements and ornaments of classic style — columns, half-columns, sculptures, stucco, sometimes with gilding, fireplaces finished in marble. Floors are laid with artistic parquet of precious wood. In the rooms there are many mirrors that visually expand the space.
The color tones of this interior style — white furniture that pairs with pastel tones of wall upholstery and gilding.
Another version of the classic interior — furniture in natural wood color, finished with bronze, while the upholstery and curtains are done in a pastel or blue-green tone. In general, noble tones are used for classic style: cream, pale yellow, slightly greenish for the walls and warm brown — for the floor and furniture. Windows in this style are dressed with portieres and drapery of complex, graceful form, and tassels are used as well.
For lighting the rooms, chandeliers of crystal or fine glass are hung on the ceilings; chandeliers with gilded shades in the form of candles also look handsome.
A bathroom looks highly ceremonial in classic style. It is finished in warm beige tones. The walls and floor are made of marble; the taps are finished with gilding.
In our day it is impossible to make a castle from an apartment, but the modern era brings its own changes, new synthetic materials appear, furniture becomes more technical and rational. You can decorate an apartment in classic style even without great expense.
A palatial style can be created with the help of rosettes, ceiling stucco of gypsum, decorative borders — all these elements will give the apartment an antique look.
If you paint the ceilings in white, it will visually increase the height of the walls and expand the space.
Above the dining table a chandelier with crystal pendants will look splendid.
On chests of drawers, antique accessories, old porcelain soup tureens, bowls with flowers planted in them will turn the rooms into magnificent artistic compositions.
For the bedroom, a bed with a canopy of fine voile works well in combination with walls of a regal red tone.
A classic home must also satisfy contemporary requirements, for a television and other equipment must be present in the apartment.
Designers try to give classic furniture modern features — various drawers for cassettes, pull-out units for televisions. Equipment may sit in a special niche in the wall. That is how the comfort of classic style is achieved.
Today’s classic interior style — is calm, without clutter and fuss. Designers combine noble wood with metal and glass. In a contemporary classic interior there are light walls, wood parquet with a matte sheen, pastel curtains at the windows, glass tabletops and mirrors in slender gilded frames. Thus, nobility is preserved in this style, and it does not look like a collection of exhibits in a museum.
